A home solar system isn’t simply one single thing.
Not only are there are many different brands to choose from, but there are also different features to build into the system.
The trifecta of a perfect home solar system is a combination of the panels, inverter, and battery.
When chosen and installed correctly, they all work together at peak performance saving you money and helping you become self-reliant for your energy needs.
Solar panels
Not all solar panels are the same, with some being more efficient than others, but these also come with a higher price tag.
Here in Australia, we have an abundance of sunlight, so high-efficiency isn’t a priority when choosing solar panels.
However, you also need solar panels that will last in our tough, unforgiving climate, so longevity does come into play when deciding.
It’s a delicate balancing act to find the right panels for you, your home, and your budget, but with professional help, it’s an easy decision.
Solar Inverters
A solar inverter does the heavy lifting when it comes to a home solar system.
While solar panels collect the energy from the sun and convert it to electricity, it’s the inverters which transform it to useable AC current.
Solar inverters play a critical role in how the overall system behaves, optimising the amount of power coming out of the panels, and more importantly, the quality and safety of the electricity generated.
Normally, up to 10 solar panels are wired together with the inverter collecting their electricity and changing it from DC to AC. Recently, however, a new type of inverter has been created, one which makes your system even more efficient.
Instead of one large inverter at the end of a string of panels, microinverters, which are smaller versions, attach directly to each individual solar panel, allowing each panel to be monitored and optimised individually.
Not only does this generate more power for your home, but because they are all separate from each other, if one panel fails, the others carry on as normal, ensuring you can still keep the lights on!
Battery Storage
A home solar system doesn’t have to include a battery backup, but if you want to get the most out of your investment, then we suggest adding storage to it.
A solar battery acts the same way as any other battery; it simply stores electricity.
The biggest criticism of solar panels is the obvious one – what do you do when the sun isn’t shining?
Battery storage solves this problem by taking the energy collected by your panels and converted by your inverter and storing it for when you need it the most.
Typically, without a battery backup, any surplus electricity generated by your home solar system is sent back into the grid, and as a customer, you receive credits for the surplus on your next bill.
With battery storage, all excess electricity is kept in your home, waiting for you when you need it the most, whether it’s a cloudy day or even at night.
Only when your battery is full does your power get sent back into the grid.
